From RPA to Autonomous Agents

Remember when RPA was the hot thing? Every conference had a session. Every consulting deck promised digital workers that would free your people from drudgery. And to be fair, RPA delivered on a lot of that promise. It automated the boring stuff reliably.

But RPA bots are followers. They do exactly what you tell them, step by step. They do not think. They do not adapt. They do not figure things out on their own. For the last decade, that has been fine. Until now.

Agentic AI is fundamentally different. These are AI systems that can receive a goal, break it down into steps, access multiple tools and data sources, make decisions at each stage, handle the unexpected, and learn from the results. They are not executing scripts. They are solving problems.

What Actually Makes an AI Agent Different

To understand the shift, think about what happens when a customer emails your support team, saying their last three invoices were incorrect, and they want a resolution and a credit. A traditional chatbot gives a canned response. An RPA bot might look up the account, but it cannot interpret the complaint or decide what to do next.

An AI agent reads the email, understands the complaint, logs into the billing system, pulls the last three invoices, compares them against the service agreement, identifies the discrepancies, calculates the appropriate credit, initiates a refund through the payment system, updates the CRM with a case note, and drafts a personalized response to the customer explaining what happened and what was done about it. All without a human touching it.

That is not science fiction. Companies are doing this right now. The key capabilities that enable it are autonomous goal decomposition, multi-system tool use, contextual decision-making, exception handling without human intervention, and the ability to learn from outcomes over time.

Where Enterprises Are Deploying Agents Today

IT operations is one of the hottest areas. AI agents are transforming security operations centers into what analysts are calling SOC 3.0. These agents monitor thousands of security events simultaneously, correlate threat data across multiple systems, and execute containment actions in seconds rather than the hours it takes human analysts. ServiceNow has reported that its AI agents cut ticket resolution times by more than half.

Supply chain management is another big one. SAP has deployed agentic AI that monitors inventory, predicts disruptions, and autonomously adjusts procurement schedules. In finance and accounting, agents handle full-cycle processes, such as expense auditing, in which they review submissions, verify policy compliance, request clarifications, and process approved reports for payment.

Customer service is the use case that gets the most attention, but the real impact lies in back-office operations, where agents quietly handle complex, multi-step processes that used to require skilled human workers and multiple handoffs between systems.

The ROI Conversation Is Getting Real

The expectations are very high. Research shows that over 62 percent of enterprises expect to recover more than double their investment from agentic AI. American companies are even more optimistic, expecting returns nearly 2x the average. And 96 percent of IT leaders say they plan to expand their use of AI agents in the coming year.

But here is the part that does not make it into the sales pitch. Only 14 percent of companies have actually fully implemented agentic AI. Most are still running pilots. And analysts expect 40 percent of these initiatives to fail by 2027 due to poor planning or an inability to demonstrate concrete ROI.

The lesson? Start small. Pick one process. Prove value. Then expand. The companies getting real results are the ones that chose specific, measurable use cases rather than trying to boil the ocean.

Watch Out for Agent Washing

Let us be direct about this. The market is flooded with vendors slapping the “agentic AI” label on products that are nothing more than rebranded chatbots or slightly upgraded RPA tools. Gartner estimates that out of thousands of companies claiming to sell agentic AI, only about 130 actually deliver genuine autonomous capabilities.

Before you buy anything, test for these five things. Can the system break down a complex goal into subtasks on its own? Can it access and act across multiple applications? Can it handle exceptions without calling a human? Does it maintain context across interactions? Can it evaluate its own performance and improve? If the answer to any of these is no, you are probably looking at a repackaged chatbot with a fancy name.

RPA Is Not Going Away. It Is Getting Promoted.

One thing that gets lost in the agentic AI hype is that RPA is not being replaced. It is becoming the backbone of AI agent execution. Even the smartest agent needs a way to log into your ERP, update a database record, or trigger a payment. RPA bots do that. Organizations with strong RPA foundations are well-positioned to adopt agentic AI because they already have automation infrastructure, governance practices, and operational discipline in place.

Think of it as a promotion. RPA moves from being the star of the show to the reliable engine room powering a smarter, more capable system.

How to Get Started Without Getting Burned

At Sphurix, we take a pragmatic approach to agentic AI. We help enterprises identify the use cases where autonomous agents will genuinely move the needle, evaluate vendor solutions against real agentic criteria (not marketing fluff), and build on existing RPA and AI investments rather than ripping everything out and starting over. Our team has the automation depth, the AI expertise, and the delivery discipline to make sure your agentic AI journey produces results, not just another pilot that never scales
